US Congressman. He graduated from Yale in 1800 and moved to Bermuda to teach at a women's seminary. Called home to support his family after the unexpected death of his father in 1801, he attended the Litchfield Law School and upon graduating became an attorney in Farmington. Whitman was Judge of the Connecticut Superior Court in 1818, Associate Judge of the Hartford County Court from 1819 to 1821, and the court's Chief Judge from 1821 to 1823. In 1821 he served on the three member commission that revised Connecticut's statutes, and he was a member of the Connecticut Senate in 1822. In 1822 Whitman was elected to the US House of Representatives as an Adams-Clay candidate and served one term, 1823 to 1825. He did not run for reelection in 1824 and resumed practicing law. He also invested in several business ventures, including the Patent Wood-Screw Manufacturing Company, and served in the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1831 to 1832. In his later years ill health and financial setbacks caused him to withdraw from public life, and he lived in near seclusion for the 10 years preceding his death. His son Henry A. Whitman was a nationally known business executive as President of the Hartford Life Insurance Company.
