| Birth: | Dec. 11, 1890 | | Death: | Jun. 24, 1935 | Famed Tango Singer, Composer, and Actor. He was the son of Charles Romuald Gardes. Some accounts say he was born in France, others say Uruguay. In 1893, Charles and his mother emigrated to Argentina. In 1911, he formed a duo with his friend José Razzano. By then, his repertory has not tangos, but folk songs. They started to sing tangos in 1917, in 1925 Carlos Gardel turned into a soloist. He made tours of Europe and America, reaching great success. He starred in the movies "Espérame," "La Casa es Seria," "Melodía de Arrabal," "Cuesta Abajo," "Mi Buenos Aires Querido," "Tango en Broadway," "El Día que me Quieras," and "Tango Bar." In April 1935 Gardel decided to set out for a tour of Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Aruba, Curacao, Colombia, Panamá, Cuba and Mexico, but he lost his life before the end of the tour in a plane crash in Medellin, Colombia, on 24 June, 1935. Today, Gardel remains an important mythical figure, so important that a popular saying says "each day he sings better." (bio by: 380W)
