Joseph Anderson Operated Hardware Stores
Joseph B. Anderson Sr., 89, Wrightsville RD 1, York businessman and civic leader, died at 9:20 a.m. Wednesday at Lebanon Veterans Hospital.
He was the husband of the late S. Elizabeth Luke Anderson.
Mr. Anderson was born in New Bethlehem, Clarion County, a son of the late Robert and Norma Corbett Anderson.
He came to York in 1922 and founded the former Anderson Hardware Co., which he operated for 41 years. There were stores in downtown York and in Wrightsville.
At his retirement, Mr. Anderson closed the business and sold the sporting goods division to Scott Stevens Co., which continues to operate at 160 W. Market St., the former Anderson Hardware location.
Mr. Anderson was active in the York community. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, a former member of the York Housing Authority, Keystone Advisory Board, Rotary Club of York, Country Club of York and the York Area Chamber of Commerce and was one of the five founding members of Credit Bureau of York, Inc.
He served on various committees of the York-Adams Council of Boy Scouts of America. With a life-long interest in boats and boating, he was a past member of the Maryland and Baltimore Yacht Clubs and served as commander of the Susquehannock Power Squadron of the U.S. Power Squadron.
A graduate of Kiskiminetas Preparatory School, he attended Pennsylvania State University. He served as a second lieutenant in the Marine Gun Corps in World War I and as a captain in Army Ordinance in World War II.
A son - Joseph B. Anderson Jr., 900 Grandview Road.
A daughter - Molly Smith, 926 Somerset Lane.
Six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A brother - Chauncey W. Anderson, St. Petersburg, Fla.
A sister - Florence McCullough, Pittsburgh.
Viewing will be 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the Baumeister and Orcutt Colonial Mortuary, Queen and Jackson streets.
His pastor, the Rev. Dr. Blair R. Monie, will officiate at the funeral service at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Wrightsville.
