Henrietta Bain Manson, 93, a teacher, homemaker, volunteer, and church member, died December 8 of respiratory failure at The Hermitage United Methodist Home in Richmond, where she had lived since 2005.

Mrs. Coiner was born in Brunswick County, a daughter of William Tally Manson and Laura Faison Manson.

She graduated from Harrisonburg State Teachers College, now James Madison University. She taught high school Latin and English on the Northern Neck for several years before her marriage in 1938. She then became a full-time homemaker and volunteer until 1957, when she returned to teaching for ten more years. As the wife of a Lutheran minister, Mrs. Coiner made homes in seven different states. She was active in church and community life wherever she lived. Her volunteer activities over the years included Meals on Wheels, adult literacy, early childhood education, and community mental health. She taught classes and provided leadership on many committees at the Lutheran churches where she was a member. Her interests included reading, walking, traveling, sewing, playing cards, listening to music, and entertaining.

She was a long-time member of Bethany-Trinity Lutheran Church in Waynesboro. At The Hermitage, she was a member of the Residents' Council and attended Bible study and music events.

Her husband, the Reverend Harry Gordon Coiner, died in 1992, after 54 years of marriage.

A daughter, Constance Coiner, and a granddaughter, Ana Duarte-Coiner, died in 1996 as passengers on TWA flight 800.

Survivors include three daughters, Betty Kitzmann of Fishersville, Virginia Classick of Woodland Hills, Calif., and Mary Coiner of Richmond; a brother, the Reverend William Tally Manson Jr., and his wife, Virginia Manson of Martinsville; a cousin, Ryland Rash and his wife, Jane Rash of LaCrosse; in-laws, Norma C.
