Funeral services for Ethna Fletcher Spencer Colwell, 97, of Pineville were held on Friday, January 2, 2004 in the Chapel of Hixon Brothers Funeral Home of Pineville.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. with the Reverend Bill Broadwater of Temple Baptist Church of Alexandria officiating. Burial followed at the Iatt Baptist Church Cemetery near Verda. Visitation was held on Thursday from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m.
Mrs. Colwell died suddenly Sunday night at Rapides General Hospital. She was a resident of Alexandria-Pineville for almost 70 years.
Even age hadn't slowed her down very much. A recent doctor's visit predicted she'd live to be 100. She told the physician she didn't want to be that old, then laughed when she realized that was just a few years away. She will be remembered for her energy, contagious enthusiasm and faithfulness to her maker, family and friends. She was indeed a woman who neither looked, nor acted her age; a tribute to her beauty and vigor.
She was born on September 23, 1906 in the Oak Grove community of Winn Parish to William Selma Spencer and Susan Rebecca Fletcher. Her parents died at a young age and she, a sister and a brother, were taken in by relatives in Verda. She was a graduate of Atlanta High School, where she was an outstanding basketball player. She frequently made the trip home for the annual Atlanta High School reunion, several times earning the award for the oldest living alumni attending the reunion.
She was a long time sales associate in the men's department of Weiss and Goldrings at their downtown Alexandria store. She was also a long time faithful member and Sunday School teacher at Temple Baptist Church in Alexandria.
Mrs. Colwell was also active in Eastern Star having served in all stations, including Past Matron of the Electa Chapter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, D. T. "Tight" Colwell; a son, Cecil Colwell; a half-sister, Thelma Spencer Hearne; one brother, Flake Spencer, a sister Dora Spencer Antee; and a grandson, Walker Colwell.
Survivors include one son, Hershel Colwell of Pineville; one half-brother, D. T. Colwell of Alexandria; a brother-in-law, John T. Hearne of Pineville; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Pallbearers were her great-grandchildren.
