PETER DE LONG, of Perry Township, has been a resident of Tippecanoe County since 1865. He was born in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, October 19, 1826, a son of Jonathan and Mary (Snible) De Long, who were both natives of Lehigh County. Peter De Long was reared a farmer, but at the age of nineteen years he began working at the blacksmith's trade, which he followed for three years. He was united in marriage, September 14, 1852, to Miss Caroline Frey, who was also born in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, November 10, 1828, a daughter of John and Mary (Housman) Frey. They have seven children living--Amanda, wife of Mortford Paul, of Perry Township; Frank and Levi, residents of Perry Township; Rosa, wife of Nathan Shankwiler, of Perry Township; Benjamin, living in the same township; Mano, of Kansas City, Missouri, and Mary, still at home. They have lost six children--a daughter named Ida, and five who died in infancy. Mr. De Long came with his family to Tippecanoe County in 1865, and settled on his present farm in Perry Township, which he purchased from Samuel Jackson. The farm now consists of 105 acres of choice land, all well improved and under fine cultivation. Mr. De Long has made valuable improvements since settling in this township, in the way of substantial barns and farm buildings, and in 1870 he erected his fine brick residence which he has since occupied. Politically Mr. De Long affiliates with the Republican party. Both he and his wife are members of the German Reform church. The De Long family is of French descent, the great-grandfather of our subject having come from France to America, and settled in Berks County prior to the Revolutionary war. The grandfather of our subject was named Christian De Long. Jonathan De Long, the father of our subject, had a family of thirteen children, and of these but three are living at the present time--Polly, in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania; John, also a resident of Lehigh County; Peter, the subject of this sketch. Joseph died in Webster County, Iowa, in August, 1870, and another brother Jonathan, died in Webster County in 1883. Mr. De Long has, by the combined industry and good management of himself and wife, acquired a fine property, and is numbered, socially and financially, among the leading citizens of this township.
