United States Marine Corps Officer. He entered the United States Marine Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant on November 10, 1813, and served on board the USS President during the War of 1812. He was captured along with his ship in an action that saw the President battle four other British vessels. Imprisoned until the end of the war, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on June 18, 1814. His subsequent service included commanding the United States Marine Barracks in Washington, DC on three separate occasions and fighting in the 1836 and 1837 Seminole Wars. Promoted to Major by the time the Mexican War started, he was detailed to lead the Marine detachment in the conflict. He was killed in action while leading his unit during its September 13, 1847 charge on the defenses at Chapultepec in Mexico City. A decorated World War II destroyer, the USS Twiggs (DD-591), was named in his honor.
