Boone County Democrat
September 11, 1913

Benjamin Summers, for a quarter of a century one of the best known and highly respected citizens of the county, passed away early Saturday morning a week ago, after an illness of long duration. Mr. Summers had been in poor health for a number of years but his condition was not of a serious nature until about two months ago. Shortly preceding his death, however, he seemed to be improving.
The funeral services were held from the M.E. church at Madrid on Monday afternoon, Rev. E.T. Stevenson officiating, and the remains laid to rest in Mt Hope cemetery.
Mr. Summers was born in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, September 23, 1844, and at the time of his death on August 30, 1913 was 68 years, 11 months and 9 days of age. On July 26, 1866, he was united in marriage to Miss Amanda Fugate (in Tippecanoe, Indiana), and in 1877 the family moved to Greene County and in 1884 moved to Kansas where they remained for four years. They located on the west side of the river in Boone County and have made their permanent home there since. Mrs. Summers preceded the husband and father in death, passing away about three years ago. The Mr. and Mrs. Summers were born four children. William H. Summers of Peoples township, David A., who lives on the home place in Cass township; Otis, of near Luther, and Mrs. Ed Hook of southeast Madrid. These four children with one brother of deceased, James of Rippey, are left to mourn his death.
