On 31 May 1849, in Gwinnett County, Henry married Elizabeth V. Barnett, usually called "Eliza" or "Elzie." They had six children in all, who were
Louisa (also called Laura) Jane Matthews, who married John M. Paden, son of Samuel Sexton Paden and Margaret Massey;
Shady Ann Matthews, who married William Perry Lankford, son of Curtis Caldwell Lankford and Catherine Ann Carruth;
William P. Matthews, who married Laura Hattie Arendall, daughter of John Laughlin Arendall and Mary Elizabeth Lankford (Laura was a cousin of William Perry Lankford);
Mary E. Matthews, who married William Perry Lankford after Shady Ann died at 31; and
Henry J. Matthews, who married Mary E. "Mollie" Whitley.
Henry Matthews was one of the larger landowners in Gwinnett County, owning more than 500 acres in Berkshire District. By 1870, probably after the war, Henry moved his family to DeKalb County and had a farm there near Stone Mountain. There his wife Eliza died in 1877, and the next year Henry married the widow Mrs. Frances C. (Davis) McCullough, widow of James W. McCullough.
