He was the Portuguese ambassador in London at the time of his election. He returned to Portugal on October 3, 1923, arriving in Lisbon in a British cruiser loaned by the English Crown. His presidency would, however, be far from achieving the national reconciliation he had desired. Discontented, he ended up resigning the mandate, voting himself into voluntary exile in the city of Béjaïa (French Algeria) from which he would never return.
