Louisa (Williams) Neff was a woman of noble character, pure motives and fixed purposes. Through great difficulties and amid the privations of a pioneer home, she acquired a good education taught school, and for a number of years was principal of St. Clairsville Female Seminary. From a brief sketch of her life, we quote as follows:- "She was a teacher at the age of sixteen in the select school taught by her brother L. D. at West Mendon. When about twenty years of age, she was a student at Genesee Wesleyan Seminary then in its infancy. In 1835 she accepted the principal ship of the Female Seminary at St. Clairsville, 0. This on the second application of the board of trustees, consisting of ex-Governor Shannon, B. S. Cowen, author of same leading law books, and other leading men, she having declined to accept the position the year previous, for Ohio seemed to her so far west. She conducted this school with marked success until about the time of her marriage to Neff. Subsequently, the school passed under the management of her brother Clark with her as his assistant. ln about 1848 with her husband and children she moved to Wheeling, W. Va. and for three years was principal of the Wheeling Female Seminary.
