William Stinson wss the son of Thomas and Margaret (?) Stinson, who lived in Pendleton District, South Carolina when he was born on November 19, 1780. (The Pendleton District was formed into Pickens and Anderson Districts and the name Pendleton discarded as a district name in 1826.) This was long after William Stinson arrived in Grayson County, Kentucky in 1814.

William married his first wife, Mollie McDaniel, in South Carolina about 1800. William and Mollie were the parents of Margaret, Nancy, John, Susannah, Caleb, William, Jr., who were born in South Carolina, and of Joel, who was born in Grayson County, Kentucky in 1816.

After Mollie's death in 1829, William married second wife, Mary Dewees on November 7, 1839. She was the daughter of Edward Dewees and Rutha Elizabeth Harrell. William and Mary were the parents of: Harrell, Wiley, Aaron, Sultana and Larkin.

William died at the age of 75 years, 8 months and 15 days on August 3, 1856 in Grayson County. He was buried in what is now the Miller Cemetery near Caneyville, Grayson County, Kentucky. Both of his wives are also buried there.
