Major League Baseball Player. He began playing semi-pro baseball at the age of fifteen. Being the youngest on the team he was given the nickname "Schoolboy" which stayed with him for life. In 1932 he signed on with the Detroit Tigers and made his major league debut on April 15, 1933. He was a right-handed pitcher with an overpowering fastball which helped him set an American League record for most consecutive victories, winning 16 straight games in 1934. In his 15 year career he played with the Tigers from 1933 to 1942 then he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. He played in the 1943 season but took the 1944 to 1945 season off so he could serve in World War II. He came back to the Phillies in 1946 and played until he retired after the 1949 season. He then became a pitching coach and scout for the Tigers until his death. (bio by: Whispers From The Grave)
