Author. He is regarded as one of the finest Spanish-American short-story writers. Born in Lima, Perú, Ribeyro made his literary debut in 1949. In 1955 he won immediate succes for his book "Los Gallinazos Sin Plumas," (1955), becoming one of the most significant short story writers of the so-called "Latin American Boom," along with Julio Cortázar. During the late 1950s he moved to Paris, where he worked as a journalist and an ambassador for UNESCO. He was also a noted novelist and essayist. In his last year, Ribeyro was awarded the most prestigious literary prize of Latin America, the Premio de Literatura Latinoamericana y del Caribe Juan Rulfo. His many works include "Los Geniecillos Dominicales," "Prosas Apátridas," "Sólo para Fumadores" and "La Palabra del Mudo." He published his memories under the title "La Tentación del Fracaso." When he died, his friends placed in his casket a bottle of wine from Burdeos and a pack of cigarettes. (bio by: José L Bernabé Tronchoni)
