Professional Soccer Player. World Cup Champion 1974. Considered by many experts to be one of the greatest goal scorers of all time, he scored 68 goals in 62 international games for Germany, including the winning goal in the 1974 World Cup, and he also won the 1972 European Championship. He also scored 365 goals in the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich, still the career record, and 40 goals in the 1971-72 season, which was the Bundesliga season record until broken by Robert Lewandowski in 2021. He also played for Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the NASL. He won four Bundesliga titles, four German Cups, three European Champions Cups, and one European Cup Winners Cup with Bayern Munich and was NASL runner-up with Fort Lauderdale. He was named European Player of the Year in 1970 (Ballon d'Or). He was one of the first 11 players named to the German Soccer Hall of Fame in 2018. After his career, he and his family remained in Florida and ran a restaurant and bar. Unfortunately, he suffered from alcoholism at this time, and returned to Germany in 1984 where later his friends and former teammates helped him recover. He was a youth coach in the Bayern Munich system from 1992-2014. In 2015, it was announced that he was suffering from Alzheimer's and he withdrew from public life.
