Henry Jackson
Birth: Oct. 19, 1747
Suffolk County
Massachusetts, USA
Death: Jan. 4, 1809
Suffolk County
Massachusetts, USA

American Revolutionary War General. He saw militia service during the British occupation of Boston, and after they evacuated in 1776 he organized a company and was chosen its commander with the rank of Captain. In 1777 his company served in Rhode Island, and later that year Jackson was commissioned a Colonel in the Continental Army as commander of the 16th Massachusetts Regiment, which he recruited from Boston and surrounding towns. Jackson's regiment took part in numerous battles, including Monmouth (New Jersey, Quaker Hill (Rhode Island) and Springfield (New Jersey). Reorganizations resulted in consolidating the 16th and 9th Regiments, with the new organization designated the 4th Regiment, which Jackson continued to command. In 1783 he was promoted to Brigadier General, and he commanded the 1st American Regiment until July, 1784, the last officer in charge of a regiment in the field during the Revolution. After the war he was a successful merchant and was the business agent for his longtime friend Henry Knox. Jackson also continued to serve in the Massachusetts militia, attaining the rank of Major General as commander of the 1st Division in the early 1790s. In 1797 he was the federal government's agent overseeing construction of the frigate USS Constitution. He was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati and he served as Treasurer of the Massachusetts chapter from 1783 until his death. Jackson was first buried in Dorchester, and reinterred when Woodward Park Street was constructed through the site of his first tomb. (bio by: Bill McKern)
