PRINCETON — Frances Nester Dunnavant, 90, of Princeton, formerly of Richmond, Va., passed away Dec. 27, 2005 at Ridge Care Center Princeton.
Born on July 30, 1915 in Coaldale, she was the daughter of the late Kelse and Hattie McHaffey Nester.
She decided in high school that she wanted to be a nurse to help others. She was a graduate of Elkhorn High School and Charleston General Hospital School of Nursing, Charleston. She moved to Richmond in 1946 and found her true calling and accepted a position at the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, which housed the first civilian burn unit in the United States. Frances was one of the first RN Supervisors and worked in the burn unit for 11 years. "It was the most interesting and gratifying job I've ever had." She retired from MVC after working over 30 years as a Registered Nurse.
Frances was a member of the Stratford Hills United Methodist Church in Richmond and Mechanicsville Chapter No. 138 of Order of the Eastern Star, Mechanicsville, Va. She enjoyed church work, crocheting, knitting and cross-stitch Psalms 23.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband Ralph K. Dunnavant and three sisters, Louise Barker, Mildred Zelenka and Hilda Phillips and one brother, Mike Nester.
Survivors include one sister, Alice Lockhart and husband Edward Jr. of Princeton; one brother, Fred D. Nester of Great Falls, Mont.; brother-in-law, Richard Phillips of Lebanon, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Frances had touched the lives of many and will be sadly missed.
Funeral services will be conducted at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home, Bluewell, on Friday, Dec. 30, 2005 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Steve Bolton officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Dec. 30, 2005 from 10 a.m. up until the funeral service. Burial will follow at the Woodlawn Memorial Park, Bluewell. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.
