Earl Stanley Updike, son of Robert Castle and Minnie Belle Trisler Updike was born July 25, 1912 in St. Joseph, Missouri and passed away July 5, 2003 at Osceola Nursing and Rehab in Osceola, Iowa at the age of 90 years, 11 months and 11 days.
He received his education the country schools near Trenton, Missouri.
He was united in marriage to Enid Elaine Murchison on June 27, 1936 at the parsonage in Van Wert, Iowa and four children blessed this marriage; Randall, Rowland, Troy and Mardis.
Earl has lived in rural Van Wert since 1941 and in 1950 he moved into town. He was stricken with Multiple Sclerosis in 1948. He owned and operated a hatchery, produce and feed business and also had a traveling movie company that would show movies in small towns. He was a member of Osceola Lodge #77 A.F.& A.M. at Osceola, Iowa as well as the United Methodist Church in VanWert, Iowa
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Selma Talbert; two brothers, Lloyd and Henry Updike; two granddaughters, Cynthia Heckman and Christy Updike.
He leaves to cherish his memory; his wife Enid Updike of Van Wert, Iowa; three sons, Randall Updike and wife Joyce of Osceola, Iowa, Rowland Updike and wife Connie of Van Wert, Iowa, Troy Updike and wife Barbara of Hopeville, Iowa; daughter, Mardis DeVore and husband Richard of Bentonville, Arkansas; twelve grandchildren, twenty five great grandchildren; a brother, Dorman Updike and wife Marjorie of Saginaw, Michigan as well as other relatives and a host of friends.
