Members of the Blair Volunteer Fire Department saluted one of their own Saturday as they paid respects to a longtime member.

Daryl Miller, 89, died Aug. 10.

Miller was one of 21 original charter members of the Blair Rescue Squad, which began Feb. 7, 1964. Other remaining members include Bob Sheets, Clarence Sheets and Martin Kuhr.

"He was enthusiastic like all the rest of us trying to get something started," Kuhr said. "We did a lot of studying with our instructor Paul Petersen. (Miller) was always there at our meetings for learning what to do."

Though he stepped back years ago, Miller remained an ardent supporter of the fire department, attending the "old timers" meetings.

"He was there every year," Fire Chief Dave Aten said. "He supported us any way he could."

Miller was on hand, along with Kuhr, Bob Sheets and Clarence Sheets, in May when the new rescue unit 811 was dedicated in memory of the squad's 21 charter members.

That same squad led Miller's funeral procession Saturday as it passed by the North Fire Station. Visible on the side was the charter members' names, including Miller's.

Eight members of the BVFD served in the honor guard. A final call was given by Washington County Dispatch.

In addition to his service to Blair, Miller also served 12 years — from 1997 to 2008 — on the Washington County Board of Supervisors.
