US Congressman. An 1840 graduate of the University of Vermont at Burlington, he was admitted to the bar in 1843. While engaged in the construction of railroads, he was the mayor of Vergennes for five years and served as state auditor from 1850 to 1852 and prosecuting attorney from 1854 to 1858. He served in State house of representatives in 1849, 1857, and 1858 and in the State senate from 1860 to 1862, becoming the president pro tempore in 1862. A Republican, he was elected to the US House of Representatives serving three terms, from March 4, 1863-March 3, 1869; he then resumed his law practice. (bio by: Thom Painter)
