Doris was born in Norfolk, Nebraska on November 19, 1918 (just 8 days after the end of WWI), the older of two children born to Samuel Eugene Shelden Owen and Bernice Mabel Vera (Wakefield) Owen. Degree 1943, and from the University of Missouri at Kansas City with a M.S. in Special Education in 1974. She taught art in the Mtn. Grove Missouri Schools 1943-44 and Special Education in the Lone Jack Missouri Schools from 1974 until her retirement in 1984. She lived in Raytown, Mo. since 1952 with her family. She is preceded in death by her father in 1959, by her mother in 1993 and her brother, Orville Owen in 2003. She is survived by sister-in-law Marie (Peterson) Owen of Orville, CA. She is also survived by all six of her children: daughter Linda (Locke) Bock of Raytown, MO; son Courtney W. and wife Stephanie (Johnson) Locke of Tempe, AZ; son Lane O. and wife Cheryl (Downs) Locke of Kansas City, MO; son Dana K. Eight great- grandchildren: Kaitlyn Carter of Republic, Mo; Molly Dean of Farmington, AR; Tyler Smith, Jacob Bell, Cain Beaver, and Tristan Beaver of Raytown, Mo; and Jason Locke and Noah Spencer of K.C., Mo. Doris (Grandma Nippy to the above survivors) was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Perhaps her greatest achievement was as a stay-at-home mother rearing six children to adulthood. She was much loved by a large family and she will be missed by each one. She was truly a gentle lady who seldom criticized any other person and rarely raised her voice for any reason whatever. She seemed a miracle woman to the medical people who attended her through the survival of ovarian cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy from 1988 for 15 years and a second diagnosis and chemotherapy from 2003 for four years through 2007. She died the day following her 89th birthday. She was one tough lady when it came to survival. She became a P.E.O. in Springfield, MO in 1941. She was a member of the Kansas City Woodcarving Club specializing in miniatures. She continued until her fingers would no longer allow her to carve. She also painted enameled china eggs with birds and animals. She made exquisite twelve-inch Kachinas, one for each of her six children. In her younger days she delighted many with her life- size beautiful snow ladies when the snow was right. She will be missed and remembered for generations.
