Mary Phelps was married to Dr. Henry Morton Mixer in Chardon, Ohio, on September 6, 1854. They did not have children of their own. However, when her brother Alfred Phelps Jr died in Japan, they took in his widow and two surviving children, and raised the girls as their own. They may not have formally adopted the girls, as they still had their surname of Phelps in the census records, but they did list them as "daughters." The younger girl, Mary, continued to live with them after her marriage. The Mixers moved with Mary and Franz Briggs to Neosho, Missouri. After Dr Mixer's death, Mary came to live with the Briggs family. Franz Briggs listed her as "mother-in-law" in the census records. She stayed with him even after her niece's death, but eventually she went to the Mary E Wilson home, where she died of appendicitis.
