The Honorable Walter Boyd Brown, Jr., Family Court Judge for the Sixth Judicial District in South Carolina, age 60, died at his home on July 6, 2007.

A native of Winnsboro, SC, affectionately known as "B", he was born on April 10, 1947, to Clara Ann "Tan" Miller Brown and the late Walter Boyd Brown. He was educated at Mt. Zion Institute and Winnsboro High School. In 1969 he graduated from the University of South Carolina where he was in Kappa Alpha Order. After service in the National Guard, he earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1973, becoming the third generation of attorneys in his family. Upon graduation B joined the law practice of Senator John A. Martin. He was City Attorney for the Town of Winnsboro prior to his election as a Family Court Judge. Judge Brown served the Sixth Judicial Circuit for thirteen years. He was past President of the South Carolina Conference of Family Court Judges, and in 2006 was the first Family Court judge to be honored by the Trial Lawyers Association. During his tenure as an attorney and as a judge, he supported families through the legal process. His commitment to parents and children reflected his own devotion to his family. Judge Brown was an elder, deacon, and trustee at Sion Presbyterian Church. He was formerly on the Board of Directors of the Bank of Ridgeway and Richard Winn Academy and a member of the Sertoma Club and other civic organizations. A loyal alumnus of USC, B was a member of the Gamecock Club. He was an avid golfer and throughout his life maintained deep friendships.

Judge Brown is survived by his wife of 32 years, Harvey Walker Brown of the home; two daughters, Frances Walker Brown Anderson and husband, Van Allen Anderson of Atlanta, GA, and Katherine Anne Brown Wolfe and husband, John Randall Wolfe of Blythewood, SC; mother, Tan Miller Brown who resides at the Presbyterian Home in Lexington, SC; one brother, David Brown and wife, Melinda of Winnsboro, SC; two sisters, Mary Boyd Brown of Pawley's Island, SC, and Anne Brown Rogers and husband, John of Montreat, SC; brother-in-law, Ralph Walker and wife, Lea of Greenville, SC; and nieces and nephews.
