Jazz Musician. Gained acclaim as a great trumpet player with Count Basie, performing from age 18 in the early 1930s until about 1950, when he left to form his own quintet. During his long career he played with Buddy Rich, Quincy Jones, Henry Mancini, Nelson Riddle, and accompanied Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and others.
