Homer Clark Waits Jr. was born in San Antonio, Texas, in 1922, to Homer Clark Waits and Roberta Stovall Waits.
He died Sunday, September 30, 2007, at the University of Virginia Medical Center having sustained brain injury after a fall at his condo at Lake Monticello, Virginia.
After graduating from the University of Texas in 1942, with a major in chemical engineering, he went to work for Standard Oil of New Jersey at their refinery in Aruba, Netherlands, West Indies. He married Almeda Stryker in 1943 and had two children. He became fascinated by the burgeoning computer industry and moved to Caracas, Venezuela in 1955, to help Esso as they developed their capabilities with computers. After a divorce in 1962, he married Jamie Richards McArdle. Avid birders, Homer and Jamie explored the world and marvelous stories to tell of their adventures.
In 1970 he retired from Esso and moved back to the United States. He and Jamie bought a house in Columbia, Va. where they lived until Jamie's death in 2000.
He is survived by his two children, Julia Waits Hagie of Sierra Madre, California and Kenneth Richard Waits of Vashon, Washington; two stepdaughters, Marie McArdle Pritchett of Cumberland County, Virginia, and Pamela McArdle Hill of Richmond, Virginia; two brothers, Caron Richard Waits and John Allen Waits, both of San Antonio, Texas; six grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. His close friend, Emily R. Gordon of Lake Monticello, will miss him also. His sister, Mary Ivor Waits Brewer predeceased him.
A celebration of his life will be held at the Eagle's Nest above the Pro Shop at the Lake Monticello Golf Club from 3 until 6 p.m. Sunday, October 14, 2007.
