Author. He is considered one of the most significant Spanish writers in the Catalan language. Born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Guimerā moved to Catalonia with his family at an early age. He began his career as a poet and he won several poetry contests. From 1870, Guimerā wrote several popular plays, wich contributed to the revival of Catalan as a literary language in the period known as Renaixenįa. His best remembered work is his play "Terra Baixa" ("Lowlands", also translated as "Martha of the Lowlands"), which became an international success. The play then was translated into 15 different languages and adapted to stage and cinema, in three Broadway productions between 1903 and 1936 and in the silent film entitled "Marta of the Lowlands" (1914). Furthermore, it served as the source for two operas: Eugen d'Albert's "Tiefland" (1903) and Fernand Le Borne's "La Catalane." Āngel Guimerā was nominated seventeen times for the Nobel Prize in Literature, though he never won. His work in both Catalan and Castilian language also include "Mar i Cel," "María Rosa," "La Festa del Blat," "La Santa Espina" and "La Hija del Mar." (bio by: José L Bernabé Tronchoni)
