She was the widow of Robert Henry Atkinson, who spent much of his life serving as superintendent of various national parks across the country. A retired businesswoman, Mrs. Atkinson owned and operated the Roanoke Island Motel for many years.
She was a charter member of the Alumni Association of the National Park Service, a life member of the Roanoke Island Historical Association, a founder of the Reginald A. Fessenden Society and a member of Manteo Baptist Church. During World War II, Mrs. Atkinson served as acting superintendent of Fort Raleigh National Historic Site while her husband served in the Coast Guard.
Mrs. Atkinson is survived by a sister, Natalie Etheridge Gorow of Roanoke Island and Bradenton, Fla. Nieces and nephews include Lee Zenovah Salet of Washington, D.C., Natalie A. Salet of Minneapolis, Dr. Lou Salet Glad of St. Paul, Roxie Christine Etheridge of Roanoke Island and Augustus Holly Etheridge of Elizabeth City.
A graveside service will be conducted in the Etheridge Family Cemetery, Etheridge Road, on the north end of Roanoke Island on Thursday, May 13, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Bruce Warrington. The family will receive friends at the home of her sister, Natalie Etheridge Gorow, 1128 North Main Highway, Manteo. Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo, is in charge of arrangements.
