Michel Simon
Birth: Apr. 9, 1895
Death: May 30, 1975

Actor. One of the most renowned of all French character stars. Born in Geneva, Switzeland, Simon began his performing career as a magician, clown and acrobat's stooge in a dancers' show. He then decided to become an actor and joined Sascha Pitoëff's company. When actor Louis Jouvet replaced Pitoëff, Simon was given more prominent roles in plays by Shakespeare, Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde. In the mid-1920s he entered the cinema, where he gained his greatest popularity. In his long career Simon appeared in more than 100 films. His best known performances include Jean Renoir's "La Chienne" (1931) and "Boudu Sauvé des Eaux"(1932), Jean Vigo's "L'Atalante" (1934) and Marcel Carné's "Le Quai des Brumes" (1938). He died in France in accordance with his wishes was buried with his parents.  (bio by: José L Bernabé Tronchoni)
