Sgt. Brittan (a/k/a Brittain, Britton, Brittoen) Smith was my ggg grandfather and was a Union soldier with the USA Co. C, 7th Cavalry. He escaped capture by General Forrest in the ill-fated 7th US Cavalry possibly because he was with a detachment sent to southern Illinois where he contracted and died of pneumonia on 16 Oct 1863. As I said, Brittan narrowly escaped being captured and being sent to Andersonville along with his daughter's father-in-law, Pvt. Winship P. (Winch) Dyer. His death, although tragic and difficult, was far easier than that of my other ggg grandfather (Winch Dyer)

He was born <1827> in NC to Henry and Nancy Smith, but had lived in Henderson Co., TN, for a number of years.
Known brothers:
William "Bill" Smith (who took care of Britain's widow and children after his death) and
Dred Smith whose family lived mostly around Sardis, TN

He was married to Amcy (a/k/a Amey or Amy) H. Milner and they had many children.
1. Frank who married Lucinda Holmes, daughter of William Holmes
2. John T (outstanding local civic, church and business leader); married Phoebe Ellen Scott (family later moved to Lavenia)
3. William T.
4. Miriam H. (or Mary) (b 1850/51> (Mrs. Joseph Dyer, brother of Frank* - family lived around Sardis.)
5. James Brittain, (married Lucinda McKenzie (sister of Dr. J. H. McKenzie) lived mostly around New Hope
6. Henry T.
7. Martha Adeline b.22 Mar 1860 (Mrs. Frank Dyer lived around Shady Hill then relocated to Newbern) (**Dee Ann's gg grandparents)
8. Nancy E. <1862> (Mrs Leonard White)
9. Tennessee D. (Mrs. Troy) White (moved to Oklahoma early)

This family lost several members in the war.
