Organized Crime Figure. Anthony Giacalone was born on the Eastside of Detroit in January of 1919. The oldest of seven siblings Giacalone spent a lot of time helping his father sell produce from the back of his horse drawn wagon in the Indian Village section of Detroit. Unimpressed by the meager living his father provided for the Giacalone family. Tony immolated the expensive clothing, cars, large wads of bills, he saw men of importance in the local underworld carry around and spend. In the city ripe with underworld activity Tony looked up to his fathers relative Salvatore "Sam" Catalanotte who was at the time the king of Detroit's growing Italian underworld. As time went on Giacalone made a name for himself with local law enforcement beginning at the age of eighteen he was charged with his first offense. He had multiple run in's with the law as the years went by. By the time he was in his early 20's he was picked up five times and only spent three nights in jail. As the 50's rolled on he was making a living as a pickup man in the local numbers racket run by Peter Licavoli and as collector of delinquent gambling debts on the orders of Joe Zerilli. Both of these men were highly respected in the local crime element and their backing played a key roll in the dismissal of the charges pending against Tony a week later. Between 1950 and 1952 he was hauled off to jail a total of five times for various gambling offenses. Due to his rising status in the local underworld as established with his connections with various top crime figures in the United States. His arrest on bribary charges showed the general public that he was a man of connections and respect. But it all ended in August of 1954 when Tony's unblemished record resulting in his first conviction in 14 arrests. He was sentenced to 8 months in jail and ordered to pay court costs. After that stint in jail he served another 7 days in jail for refusing to testify before the grand jury investigating gambling in the Detroit area. Giacalone gained national fame in the 1970s with the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa. It is noted that he might have played a key roll in Hoffa's ending but to this day no one knows where Hoffa is buried. (bio by: Josh Perry)
