Emery Lane Christensen, son of Mrs Clifford Pedersen and the late Emery Christensen, was born at Trona, California on February 8, 1939. He died in the Audubon Memorial hospital at Audubon, Iowa on February 22, 1956, of injuries sustained in a acar accident which took place near Hamlin, February 21. He was 17 years, 14 days old.
Except for a year and a half spent in Kansas City, Mo. where his parents resided for a time, he spent the first six years of his life in California. He came to Harlan with his mother and sister at the age of six and had attended the Harlan schools since.
During his freshman year he was vice-president of his class and was manager of the basketball and track teams. At the time of his death he was a member of the junior class and was in the cast of this year's junior class play. He belonged to the Hi-Y association and attended the Baptist church. During the summer he was employed by the county and worked part time at Baker's store during the school year.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs Clifford Pedersen, who teaches Jackson township school No. 4, a sister, Sandra Christensen and step-sister, Judy Pedersen, at home; his step-father Clifford Pedersen, who is with the county road maintenance department, and a step-brother, Raymon Pedersen, who is a student at Dana college. Also surviving are two grandmothers, Mrs M.L. Christensen of Kirkman and Mrs B.L. McCord, great-grandfather, J.W. Grabill, and step-grandfather and grandmother, Mr and Mrs Holger Pedersen.
Preceding him in death are his father, Emery Christensen, who was killed in a TWA plane crash in Wilmington, Delaware, November 18, 1947 and two grandfathers, M.L. Christensen and B.L. McCord.
Funeral services were held at the Bethel Baptist church February 24 with the Rev. A.M. Halvorsen of Spencer, former pastor of the Harlan church, in charge. Schoolmates served as pallbearers, namely: Fred Nelson, Dean Copeland, Douglas Larson, Gary Paulsen, Warren Hansen and Daryl Van Duyn. Burial was in the Bowman's Grove cemetery. Pauley's funeral home directed the service.
