"Lance enrolled at Texas A&M in the Fall of 1942, but withdrew at mid-semester to join the U. S. Marine Corps. He went through basic training along with his brother Tige at San Diego, California. In July of 1943 Lance participated in the New Georgia campaign in the South Pacific. He strung field telephone lines under fire to field commands on various Pacific islands. He had a total of three campaign medals. He witnessed the Battle of Kula Gulf from a hillside early in the war. His outfit was later part of the Third Marine Amphibious Corps. He was stationed at Camp LeJeune in North Carolina as the war wound down. He served with the occupation forces in North China after the Japanese surrender. He was mustered out with the rank of staff sergeant in February of 1946."
