Birth: Apr. 25, 1835
Death: Feb. 6, 1907

Civil War Union Army Officer. He began his Civil War service as a Private in Company B, 7th New York Militia, which was one of the first Northern military unit's to arrive in Washington, DC after the war started with the Confederate bombardment of Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. After his mustered out when the regiment's enlistment expired in June 1861, he joined the 7th Vermont Volunteer Infantry months later, being commissioned as Captain and commander of Company C on January 15, 1862. Promoted to Major on August 28, 1862, he fought with his men in Mississippi and Louisiana, and served as Provost Marshall of New Orleans, Louisiana from October 1863 to October 1864. He served through the end of the conflict, and received a promotion to Lieutenant Colonel on June 29, 1865. When the 7th Vermont's commander, Colonel David B. peck, was mustered out of service at the end of August 1865, Henry M. Porter assumed command of the regiment, which was now engaged in occupation duty in Texas. He was commissioned Colonel on September 1, 1865, but due to the small size of his regiment, he was never mustered in at that rank. Finally, on March 14, 1866, he and the 7th Vermont were honorably mustered out, making him the last commander of the longest serving Civil War unit from Vermont.
