Martha Thornton was the seventh child born to Edward Walker (1776-1848) and Mary Griffin (1781-1853). She lived in the county and state of her birth until her parents moved to Lauderdale Co., Alabama, where they stayed until their move to Callaway Co., Missouri well before 1840.
On the 2 January 1840, Martha married Jeptha Thornton (1821-1889), the son of William H. Thornton (1792-1858) and Sally Todd (1793-1891), in Missouri. Martha and Jeptha had ten children between 1841 and 1864: William, Sally, Mary, Emily, Josiah, Jeremiah, Samuel, Priscilla, Permelia, Rebecca, and Martha.
In 1865, Martha, Jeptha, and their children moved to Oregon, settling first in Yamhill County before moving to Douglas County, where they lived in the town of Oak Creek. Like her husband, Martha was an active member of the Primative Baptist Church.
Jeptha, her husband, died on the 2 March 1889 in Roseburg, Douglas Co., Oregon; he was buried in Oak Creek Cemetery. Martha followed him in death about ten years later. She was also buried in Oak Creek Cemetery. Her headstone has the inscription, "Rock of Ages cleft For me, Let me hide Myself in thee," upon it.
