PEORIA - Ethel Cheesman Oertley, 86, of Peoria died at 1:05 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007, at Manor Court at Liberty Village of Peoria.

She was born Jan. 12, 1921, in Princeville to Carl and Lucile (Gittler) Cheesman. On Jan. 21, 1945, she married Glenn D. Oertley in the First Presbyterian Church of Princeville. He survives.

She is also survived by her sister, Barbara (Roy) Durbin of Haigler, Neb.; three children, Nancy (Harvey) Varness of Chillicothe, David (Elaine) of Peoria and Charles (Karen) of Nashville, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Erik (Kate) Varness of Peoria, Todd Varness (and fiancee Dierdre Conley) of Madison, Wis., Kristin Varness of Madison, Wis., Ann (Johnny) Kantz of West Peoria and Jennifer Oertley of Yountville, Calif.; three great-grandchildren, Emma, Max and Samantha Varness of Peoria; and a foreign exchange student, Ludo Claussens of Antwerp, Belgium.

She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, Miles G. Colwell; and two brothers, Robert and Jack Cheesman.

She attended Princeville schools, Eureka College and Bradley University, where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in education.

She first taught in a one-room school in Edelstein and later in the Dunlap Schools, at both Wilder-Waite and Pioneer Junior High. She was a no-nonsense, dedicated teacher who challenged all students to do their best, both academically and athletically.

She was also active as a Sunday School teacher, Scout and 4-H leader, and in various community youth activities. She enthusiastically helped establish the Oertley Family Scholarship Fund at Illinois Central College and was a member of the University of Illinois Foundation Presidents Council. She was a longtime member of Prospect United Methodist Church in Dunlap.

She loved her family, friends and church. She enjoyed teaching and, after her retirement, golfing and bowling.

A Celebration of Ethel's Life will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 26, 2007, at Prospect United Methodist Church, Dunlap. The Rev. Mary Kathryn Pearce will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church. A private family burial will take place in Princeville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oertley Family Scholarship through the Illinois Central College Educational Foundation, 1 College Drive, East Peoria, IL 61635 or to Prospect United Methodist Church, 300 E. Ash, Dunlap, IL 61525.

Hammitt-Hott Funeral Home in Princeville is in charge of arrangements.
