British Peer. 1st Baron Chelmsford. Born Frederick Thesiger in London, England, the son of Charles and Mary Anne Williams. He gained the rank of Midshipman in the service of the Royal Navy at the age of thirteen and fought in the Bombardment of Copenhagen in September 1807. After his military service he was admitted to Gray's Inn and entitled to practice as a barrister. He married Anna Maria Tinling in March 1822 and with her had six children. He was invested as a King's Counsel in 1834. He sat as a Member of Parliament for Woodstock between 1840 and 1844. He served as Solicitor-General in 1844. He was invested as a Knight in May 1844 and was invested as a Fellow, Royal Society in 1845. He sat as Member of Parliament for Stamford between 1852 and 1858. He was invested as a Privy Counselor in February 1858 and held the office of Lord Chancellor between 1858 and 1859. He was created 1st Baron Chelmsford of Chelmsford, in March 1858 and again served as Lord Chancellor between 1866 and 1868. Upon his death at age 84, he was succeeded in his titles by his son, Frederick.
