Edith Balla, or "Honeybunch" as she was known to her family, was born the sixteenth child of William Hardy "Hard" Flowers (1866-1928) and Celestine "Tennie" Bankston (1869-1939). By her father, Edith was a descendant of two pioneer families (Flowers and Brackin). She grew up in the same place she was born, Honey Island.
On the 24 December 1934, Edith married Alex Balla Jr. (1908-1977), the son of Alexander Balla (1886-1950) and Julia Molnar (1885-1962), in Jasper Co., Texas. Edith and Alex had four children between 1936 and 1954: Shirley, Alex Derriel, Terry, and Edith.
Edith and her family lived in Kountze, Hardin Co., Texas. On the 3 June 1977, Alex, her husband of forty-tree years, passed away; and was buried in Old Hardin Cemetery. She remained in Kountze, surrounded by her loved ones. She was a member of the Honey Island Assembly of God Church, a church her family helped to establish in the early part of the last century.
Because of declining health, Edith became a resident of Country Dreams Assisted Care, an assisted living retirement home in Kountze, in 2004. On the 27 November 2004, Edith passed away at Country Dreams. She was buried next to her husband, who passed away twenty-seven years before her, in Old Hardin Cemetery. She was survived by all four of her children and their spouses, as well as ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Her obituary appeared in the Beaumont Enterprise on the 29 November 2004.
