Birth: Jan. 5, 1834
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Sep. 29, 1872
Stephenson County
Illinois, USA

In Waddams, on Sunday, September 29th, 1872, from the effects of a wound received in the late war, HIRAM SHIPPY, aged 38 years, 8 months and 25 days......Mr. Shippy came to Illinois about 17 years ago, located in Stephenson county, and has ever since, up to the time of his death, been a citizen thereof. In August 9th, 1862, he enlisted as a private in Captain Taggart's company of the 93d Ill. Infantry. As a soldier he was always prompt, devoted and brave, and doing his duty cheerfully, and facing danger doing his duty cheerfully, and facing danger as only a true soldier can. He was in every important engagement in which his regiment took part, and conducted himself honorably. At Mission Ridge, Tenn., his hat was cut with a ball and a bunch of hair clipped from his head. At the terrible battle of Altoona Pass, Oct. 4, 1864, none faced the enemy's bullets more bravely than he, but during the hottest of the fight befell, badly wounded in the left breast. We were with him during that terrible day and we feared that one of our most heroic comrads must die. He bore his sufferings manfully and recovered sufficiently to be sent to Quincy, where, after he was able to be around, he was transferred to the Invalid Corps. He was discharged in 1865 and returned to his home, yet frequently suffering from the effects of his wound. He died quite suddenly, and a post mortem examination revealed the fact that a portion of his left lung was nearly cut off, and that after years the wound he received in the army was the cause of his death.......Among his acquaintances he was honored and respected by all. A loving husband and father, a kind and social neighbor, dealing honorably and fairly with all men, his loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him. He leaves a wife and seven children to mourn his loss, who have the sympathy of the entire community. Children OF HIRAM & MARY JANE SHIPPY: James Lee, Sarah (Sadie), Ulyssis Grant, William Sherman, Douglas Dudley, Rachel, Cornelius, Infant Son, Herman, Hiram
