Major League Baseball Player. Played Major League Baseball as an outfielder for 15 seasons (1907-1921) for the Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago Cubs. Beginning with the Reds in 1907, he gained a reputation as being a excellent defensive outfielder, which tended to overshadow his offensive output. In 1910, a year which he batted .300 and stole 51 bases, he stole 2nd, 3rd and home in a May 10 game against the Boston Braves. Traded with Hans Lobert to the Phillies in 1911, he became a regular in their outfield for the next 7 seasons, and grew to be a dangerous leadoff hitter. His best year in the majors was in 1912, when he scored 102 runs and batted .315. In 1915 he helped the Phillies to their first World Series appearance, where they lost to the Red Sox 4 Games to 1. After the end of the 1917 season he was traded to the Cubs for power hitting Cy Williams (a move that brought the Phillies their only true star through the 1920s). He contributed to the Cubs pennant-winner in his first season with the team, and played in the 1918 World Series against the Red Sox (the Sox won 4 games to 2, their last Championship to date). After playing three years with the Cubs he returned to the Reds for one last season before retiring with totals of 1,613 hits, 42 Home Runs, 577 RBIs and a .268 career Batting Average.
