Lincoln Ellsworth
Birth: May 12, 1880
Death: May 26, 1951

Explorer. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he was a wealthy financier with interests in north polar studies when he attempted the first flight to reach the North Pole with Roald Amundsen in 1925. Although there efforts failed, they were successful in flying a dirigible across the North Pole to Alaska in May 1926. Next with pilot Herbert Hollick-Kenyon, he completed the first trans Antarctic flight in history, an accomplishment not repeated again until January 1956. In 1936, on flight expedition to the Antarctic he named and claimed Ellsworth Island for the United States. On a flight in 1939, he claimed the high plans area and called it, American Highland in the Antarctic. He continued to live a full and adventurous life until his death in New York City. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
