Father of Verne Hardin Porter, he was a lawyer by profession and was one-time mayor of Abilene, Texas. At thirteen years of age he joined the Confederate Army for the Civil War and by the end of the war he was honored with the title of Captain. During his service in the War, he was imprisoned twice and shot twice.
