Jeanette Augusta Harris Bullock was born on August 8, 1916 to Samuel S. and Julia Harris in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During her young years, she was conscientious about her schooling and enjoyed sports and theatre. She excelled in tennis, often beating the men on the Clay Courts in Fairmount Park.
Raised in a loving Christian home, Jeanette and her siblings were baptized at Miller Memorial Baptist Church, where their father was a trustee. She was extremely proud to tell people that her father, a carpenter and contractor, was instrumental in the construction of their Church.
At the age of 15, Jeanette suffered the loss of her dear mother. Jeanette immediately became the matriarch of the family, helping her father to raise her sisters, Louella and Celeste and brother, Herbert. She made sure that the younger children had active memories of their mother to carry through their lives.
After graduating from Girls High School, she married Frank H. Bullock, Jr. in 1937. This union was blessed with four children: Thackery, Whitney, Julia and Paul. Her role as mother was the one she praised the most.
A multi-faceted woman, Jeanette was an accomplished seamstress, able to make a dress without a pattern. She graduated from Berean Institute, completing their program in fashion design. She obtained her real estate license and pioneered in the Philadelphia Market. She was the first manager of color at the exclusive Tribout Shop at John Wanamaker in Jenkintown. In later years, she was employed at the Internal Revenue Service.
An active member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church, she enjoyed working with the Youth Church. She taught Sunday school and directed the youth programs. She enjoyed the choirs, particularly the gospel music and spent many private moments listening to Mahalia Jackson.
An avid believer in equal rights for all, she was a devoted follower of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She participated in the historic 1963 March on Washington, D.C. and maintained a comprehensive scrapbook of Kings' speeches and activities. She taught her children to pursue higher education and to be independent, striving constantly for improvement.
Jeanette will be fondly remembered as someone devoted to her family and her faith. She is survived by two sons, Whitney and Thackery; a sister, Celeste Joyner; three sisters-in-law, Barbara Harris, Edna Chloe and Willie Mae Bullock; cousins, nieces and nephews of several generations; and a host of other relatives and loving friends.
