U.S. Senator. Graduating from Hamilton College New York, in 1816, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1819 and commenced to practice of law in Kaskaskia, Illinois. He was judge of Randolph County, (1827-30). He was appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John McLean and served November 12, 1830, to December 11, 1830. Not a candidate for election, he was district attorney for the district of Illinois, (1833-41) and practiced law until his death at age 76.
