J. G. BANKSON DEAD

Former Marshal and Business Man of
This City Dead.

A message was received in this city today announcing the death of J. G. Bankson, ex-marshal of the city and a former business man at Hillsboro, Texas. The remains will arrive in the city tonight. The arrangements for the funeral are not completed.

Mr. Bankson left here a month ago in company with a nephew, Andrew Bankson on an overland trip to San Antonio, Texas, in the hopes of benefitting (sic) his health which is very poorly. The message to his daughter, Mrs. L. D. Hart, 916 Euclid avenue containing the sad news, did not state the cause of death, but it is presumed asthma, from which he was suffering, was the real cause.

Mr. Bankson was one of the pioneers of the camp, coming here from Granby, Mo., twenty-five years ago. He engaged in mining. He was at one time city marshal. Mr. Bankson engaged in business here about ten years ago and still owns the Bankson grocery store on East Seventh street. He was a member of the Odd Fellow lodge and will be buried under their auspices. His daughter, Mrs. Hart, is the only member of the family living.

Biographical Notes:
James G. Bankson, a native of Iowa, married Miss Delpha A. Arbold (a transcription of one of their marriage records), a native of Fayette County, Virginia, on November 11, 1871, in Newton County, Missouri.

Delpha’s maiden name and middle initial has been transcribed in many different formats. Most likely it was Arbough. In the 1870 census of Newton County, it was written as Delfa J Aubaugh or Arebough. In the 1850 census taken in Fayette County, Virginia, on August 9, she is listed with her parents, “Calip and Elleanor Arbough. Her age is given as 3 months, which would give her birth month as May, consistent with her grave marker, although the birth year should be 1850. In the 1860 census, the family is living in Putnam County, Virginia, and initials are mostly used, with the last name transcribed as Arbaugh. Both her parents are still living—C and E. Her initial is given as P. In the 1870 census in Newton County, her father’s name is written as Kallup Aubough, born in 1825 in Virginia, a farmer. Delpha died in May of 1874 in Newton County after the birth of her daughter, Laura D, in 1872. As far as is known, her husband did not marry a second time.

In 1880 and 1885 James and his daughter Laura lived with his parents, John Scott Bankson and his wife Rebecca Teagarden, in Cherokee County, Kansas.

Another Grocery.

James Bankson & Co. have rented the south room in the Sapp building at the corner of Sixth and Main. The grocery of E. A. Gray formerly occupied this room. The new firm will put in a stock of groceries and a meat market at once. The south end of Main street seems to be on the boom.
