Thomas was born to Alexander Peden and Lydia Thomas at Lancaster, Lancaster Co., PA. His father was an outstanding Quaker preacher and scholar. His mother died when he was 4 years old and after his father remarried he was raised by his new stepmother, Abigail Walton. Thomas grew up with his half-siblings, Ann, Obadiah, Jesse, Darius,Joseph, Lydia, Rachel, Alexander and Margaret Peden.
He married Sarah Smith (b. 1791) in Feb. 1821, in PA. Thomas was disowned by the Westland Meeting of Quakers because his wife was not a Quaker. Only one child, James Thomas was born to this union on Oct. 28th 1821. After his wife died, Thomas bound out his son to a neighbor as a blacksmith apprentice.
After Thomas's parents died, he and several of his brothers and sister Rachel Peden Brown, moved to Indiana. Some of them relocated again later on.
Thomas married for the second time, to Mary Ann Woods, his 2nd cousin, (b.Feb. 22nd, 1811) on April 20th 1828 in Palestine, Darke County, Ohio. To this union eight children were born, Thomas T Jr., Lydia Ann, Rebecca Ann, Jesse, Mary Ann, Hester, Melissa Ann, and James S. Peden.
Thomas and Mary acquired an 800 acre farm in Jay County, IN., where they remained. They and their three sons are all buried in the same cemetery. (bio by: Waunita M Herron)
