US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar in 1844 and opened a law practice in King William County, Virginia. He was a delegate to the State Constitutional Convention in 1850 and a member of the State Senate, 1852 to 1865. During the Civil War, he served in the Confederate Army as First Lieutenant in Lee's Rangers and was successively promoted to Major of the Fifth Virginia Cavalry. In 1875, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth and Forty-fifth Congresses and served until his death.
