Son of S. W and Mary E Candee Baldwin. At the age of 5 months, Judge Baldwin's family moved to Elyria, Ohio. Two years later, his mother Mary died. In 1845, his father remarried and returned the family to Connecticut. In 1856, the family once again returned to Elyria. He graduated from Wesleyan University with high honors and then went on to study law at Harvard where he received his LL. D. degree in 1857. He was than admitted to the Ohio State Bar later that same year. He first worked for the law offices of S. B and J.F Prentiss. He became a partner and then in 1878, the firm changed its name to Baldwin and Ford. His main focus was related to corporate and banking law. He also had other business interest as well. His health became impaired in 1870 and he went to Europe to travel for some time. After his return to the area, he decided to take up insurance for a while instead of law. He was the vice president of the Cleveland Linseed Oil Co and director of several banks. He was one of the founders of the Western Reserve Historical Society and was elected president in 1886. Survived by his wife, Caroline Prentiss Baldwin and two children, Samuel P. Baldwin and Mrs. J.P. Sawyer Information provided by mamaquilts
