| Birth: | May 5, 1282 | | Death: | Jun. 13, 1348 | Author, Nobleman. Don Juan Manuel is highly regarded as one of the most significant Spanish medieval writers. The nephew of the King Alfonso X El Sabio, Don Juan Manuel was one of the most richest and powerful men of his time. Don Juan Manuel wrote in Castillian language, not in Latin as most writers before him, as a way to facilitate access to literature for a greater number of readers. His most acclaimed work was "El Conde Lucanor or Libro de Patronio," a compilation of fables and short stories with a didactic and moral intention, which was considered the precursor of Boccaccio's "Decamerone." Don Juan Manuel also developed an intense political activity until his death. His many works also include "Libro del Caballero y del Escudero" and "Tratado de la Asunción de la Virgen María."
