Betty Jane James Wood
Betty Jane James Wood was born in Jefferson, Oklahoma to Rex Alfred and Ella Jane Ricks James on March 1, 1924. She passed away October 20, 2007 in Raymore, MO. The family moved to Freeman, MO in 1940, she graduated from Freeman High School in 1942. She attended CMSU at Warrensburg one summer and started teaching that fall at Glendale Rural School southwest of Freeman about 3 miles where she taught 2 years. She then taught at West Line 1 year. She also taught in the Pleasant Hill system. Betty was an accomplished pianist and over the years gave piano lessons to dozens of young people. The girls were attracted to her skills and reasonable rates, the boys more by her good looks. Betty married Robert Wood at Harrisonville April 23, 1948. Four children came to bless their lives. Robert W. II, Randol W., Richard W. and 9 1/2 years later Malissa Jane. Betty was preceded in death by her parents and grandson Richard Spencer Wood. She is survived by her husband of 59 1/2 years, 4 children, 11 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and her brother Vernon James of Freeman, MO and his family. Betty continued to go to school eventually receiving a master's degree in education. After moving to Maryville, Betty taught in the laboratory school at Northwest Missouri State University for several years until she and Bob moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma where she avidly pursued painting, golf and bridge. In 1986 they moved back to Kansas City where Betty decided to enter the field of Real Estate sales which she pursued with her usual vigor, serving 1 year as President of the south chapter of the Kansas City Board of Realtors. She belonged to PEO chapter DB. During this time she volunteered at the Nelson Art Gallery for 18 years, continued playing bridge, tennis and swimming. She loved to travel and never met a trip she didn't like, having been to many countries in Europe, Greece and numerous trips to Mexico. Her greatest joy was being a mother, grandmother, and eventually a great grandmother. Cremation with inurnment at Freeman, MO, at a later date. The family requests in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Fellowship of John Fund at Foxwood Springs Living Center or American Heart Association. Visitation 4-5 p.m. Monday at Bromwell Lounge at Foxwood Springs Living Center, Raymore, MO followed by memorial service at 5 p.m. Bob and the family are forever grateful for all the caregivers who helped with Betty's care the last five years, especially those at Foxwood Springs.
