Betty Fain Wright, 84, of Amarillo died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Brian Hesse and the Rev. David Schatte, pastors, officiating. Private burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Mrs. Wright was born on April 15, 1924, on the Fain family farm in Weatherford to Mary and Douglas Fain. She was the eighth of nine children.
While growing up on the dairy farm during the Great Depression, she and her family generated many stories that have been told to children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren for years. Betty graduated from Weatherford High School in 1943 as a class favorite and cheerleader. She returned to reign as homecoming queen in 1966.
She went to Weatherford Junior College and taught for a year at the Greenwood School before entering John Sealy College of Nursing of The University of Texas in Galveston.
There she met a medical student, Norman Wright. After marriage in May 1945, and graduation for both, they moved to Dumas in 1946, where she began a family and assisted Dr. Wright in starting his practice of medicine.
After moves to West Point, New York and Houston for military and specialty medical training for her husband, the family located to Amarillo in 1959, where she concentrated on raising her five children and serving the community.
Betty was active as a Cub Scout den mother and as a Girl Scout Troop leader. She served on the board of the Amarillo Girl Scout Council for many years.
She was an active participant in the Potter Randall County Medical Alliance organization until her later years, and served her Lord and church at Trinity Lutheran Church for almost 50 years in various capacities.
She was known as a gracious hostess, a generous friend, an avid bridge player, a supportive spouse and a patient and wonderful mother.
The family wishes to thank caregivers, Annette Mills and Mattie Campbell for their love and care of "Miss Betty."
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Dr. Norman E. Wright, on March 20, 2003.
Survivors include her youngest sibling, Norma Braly of Houston; three daughters, Susan Lawson and husband Bill of Salado, Sara Wright of Amarillo and Martha Irei and husband Mike of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two sons, Norman Wright and wife Peggy and Geoffrey Wright and wife Lacy, all of Amarillo; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Trinity Lutheran Church, 5005 W. Interstate 40, Amarillo, TX 79106; or BSA Hospice, P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79105.
